Last year, Ford made waves with the unveiling of the Mustang GTD, essentially a race car for the road. What really caught enthusiasts' attention wasn't so much the car’s purpose, but rather its price. While the official figure hasn't been confirmed, it’s believed that its price hovers around $400,000 before options. That’s an enormous sum, bordering on the absurd, for sure. However, this is the most powerful Mustang in the model’s history, and it’s a car that compares to the legendary Porsche 911 GT3 RS, the benchmark in its category.
Earlier this week, Ford finally revealed some interesting numbers about the 2025 Mustang GTD. It’s now known that its 5.2-liter supercharged V8, derived from the GT500, delivers 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful production Mustang of all time. In comparison, the previous-generation Shelby GT500 had an output of 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque.
When Science Steps In
Unsurprisingly, the Mustang GTD is also extremely fast. The American manufacturer’s sports car boasts a top speed of 325 km/h (202 miles per hour). The reason the Mustang GTD can reach such speeds is due to its highly refined aerodynamics, particularly the active rear wing, which benefits from a drag reduction system, similar to what’s found in modern Formula 1 cars.
The Mustang GTD's high price is justified by the fact that engineers left nothing to chance in its design. Every single component has been optimized for maximum performance. For this reason, the Mustang GTD is equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes and adaptive suspension. The American muscle car's engine also benefits from a dry sump system that pumps oil more efficiently throughout the engine, a first for the Mustang. Once again, this is the kind of technology found in exotic cars.
Less Than 7 Minutes
Ultimately, Ford’s goal is to clock a time of less than seven minutes on the legendary Nürburgring circuit. In fact, this is a promise the American manufacturer has made to its fans.
