The acronym SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) has cast a wide net in recent years. It now encompasses nearly all vehicles that are not pickup trucks or cars. However, most models within this category are anything but utilitarian or sporty. Rest assured, though, there are vehicles that honor this definition, like the Ford Expedition.

The F-150 is clearly the star of the show for the American automaker. It's hard to find a vehicle as versatile and robust that meets all your needs while allowing you to enjoy outdoor adventures without restriction. That said, there's another model that offers almost as much freedom—if not more—especially if you have a large family: the Expedition. In fact, the model's popularity has been steadily growing over the years, prompting Ford to offer a broader and more diverse lineup than ever.

The American automaker's large SUV is getting a major update for 2025. Its exterior design has become more refined, and the interior is more modern than ever, thanks to a newly designed dashboard layout. The Timberline version has also been replaced by the new Tremor version, which boasts enhanced off-road capabilities.

Range and Pricing

For 2025, the Ford Expedition lineup includes four versions. It all starts with the Active model, which serves as the entry-level version. However, it's far from a basic model, especially with a starting price of $82,115. The American SUV comes with a comprehensive list of standard equipment. The price makes a significant leap with the Platinum version, starting at $96,045, which offers more luxurious finishes and high-end technologies.

Next is the legendary Tremor version, which isn't for every budget, with a starting price of $104,465. However, it's worth every penny, particularly for its off-road driving capabilities. Finally, the King Ranch version sits at the top of the range, starting at $107,535. This is where you'll find total luxury with a "cowboy" twist. Note that all versions, except the Tremor, are also available in the MAX variant.

Category and Competition

The Ford Expedition belongs to a category that has gained significant popularity in recent years. Previously, large SUVs were mostly reserved for businesses in the security sector or, occasionally, criminal enterprises. Today, these vehicles appeal to a much wider audience. The Expedition is undoubtedly one of the most interesting models in its category, especially thanks to its diverse range of versions.

Competitors: Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Nissan Armada, Toyota Sequoia

Design and Technology

The Ford Expedition has received a major aesthetic update for 2025, particularly at the front, which is now less boxy and more angular, giving it a more imposing look. Some versions even feature a light bar encircling the grille. However, my favorite is the Tremor model, with its orange accents that create an appealing contrast with the rest of the bodywork.

Ford has moved away from the traditional dashboard layout above the steering wheel in favor of a digital display placed further along the dashboard. While I'm not a big fan of this design trend, it's well-executed here. Ford has also replaced the large vertical multimedia screen with a more user-friendly horizontal one.

Performance

The 2025 Ford Expedition offers two mechanical options, starting with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that delivers 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission as standard. Some versions are equipped with a more powerful engine—a high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 delivering 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the version, the American SUV can tow up to 9,600 pounds.

Weak Points

  • The price increases significantly from one version to the next.
  • No hybrid version is available.

Strengths

  • Elegant design and high comfort levels.
  • Intuitive and effective technology.
  • The Tremor version offers breathtaking off-road capabilities.

Signature Element

The Ford Expedition stands out for its versatility, robustness, and durability.

Final Word

Few vehicles can meet the needs of the entire family while also allowing for great adventures. That's what the Ford Expedition delivers. Admittedly, it's not affordable for every budget, but it's a model that's worth every penny.
